Application Techniques

Makeup is an interplay of light and dark accents to achieve an effect. Dark colors recede and give the illusion of diminishing areas and light colors stand out and give the illusion of augmenting features. So, for example, you can “pull” the center of the face out by making it lighter than the circumference. This look flatters almost everyone and is particularly useful when applying makeup to an Asian face as generally, the Asian face has flatter planes.

Accents can be concentrated on either the interior or the exterior of the face. The current trend is to put color emphasis on the exterior. This makes the face look wider. Placing color towards the center of the face helps to correct a too-round or square face.

Too dark foundation will exaggerate fine lines and accentuate pores. On black skin, choose a powder slightly lighter than the skin tone. This will minimize any ashy tendency. You may need to use two colors, the lighter one in the middle.

Choose your makeup brushes carefully - they can totally alter your look.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and to get you ready to go from work to an evening out here are a few simple tips:

Two looks are classic and hot right now: The smokey, shimmery eye paired with light lips and the deep red lips balanced with a light eye. Shimmer is in this year, as it was last year, and it's the perfect festive look as long as you don't overload on the shimmer.

For the Smokey Eye

  1. Apply your eye makeup: Eyeliner on both top and bottom lashes (be sure to 'smudge it,' dark eyeliner will age you), a eye shadow primer (Jane Iredale primer in petal), and a shimmery shadow on the lid. Don't apply any more mascara unless your earlier application has rubbed completely off, otherwise you risk getting clumpy lashes.
  2. Dab a shimmery blush to cheeks (I love Jane Iredale’s new In-Touch Cream Blushes in Connection, Chemistry and Charisma, which also works as lipstick!).
  3. Powder your face lightly.
  4. Apply a light lipstick or gloss.

For Deep Red Lips

  1. Cover unsightly veins on eyelids with a matte eyeshadow in a color that's as close as your skin tone as possible (such as a beige).
  2. Apply a very light shimmery blush on cheeks.
  3. Line lips and fill in with your favorite red color.
  4. Powder face.

**Primers are a must this season for both face and eye makeup. Primers go on before foundation

Today's makeup trend is about picking the best feature and emphasizing it. It's called "leading the focus." But, please, no needless decoration. Makeup is about enhancing the wearer's beauty not calling attention to your work. When you have finished a makeover, view your work from two feet. This is the distance most people stand from each other.
